Editorial Guidelines

Last Updated: November 24, 2025

These Editorial Guidelines outline the principles, standards, and processes that guide content creation at The Archipelago. Our goal is to publish articles that are accurate, respectful, inspiring, and grounded in thoughtful storytelling.

As a digital publication focused on Indonesian culture, nature, travel, and history, we take editorial integrity seriously. Every piece of content—whether research-based, narrative, or exploratory—must adhere to the principles described below.

1. Editorial Mission

Our mission is to offer readers:

  • Clear and insightful cultural perspectives
  • Responsible and well-researched travel information
  • Respectful interpretations of traditions and regional stories
  • Thoughtful writing that reflects Indonesia’s diversity
  • Modern, accessible storytelling for a global audience

We aim to provide content that is both informative and artistic, while maintaining accuracy and cultural sensitivity.

2. Core Editorial Principles

2.1 Accuracy and Verification

We strive to ensure all information is accurate at the time of publication.
This includes:

  • Cross-checking basic facts
  • Verifying key cultural or historical details
  • Avoiding exaggerated or misleading statements
  • Reviewing sources for credibility

For information that may change over time (e.g., travel logistics), we explicitly encourage readers to verify current conditions.

2.2 Cultural Sensitivity

Indonesia is culturally diverse, with traditions that vary across regions and communities.
Our guidelines include:

  • Avoiding claims of absolute authority
  • Recognizing multiple interpretations of traditions or beliefs
  • Respecting local voices and perspectives
  • Avoiding cultural stereotypes or generalizations

Articles may present a perspective, not the definitive version of a tradition.

2.3 Transparency and Honesty

We are transparent about:

  • Our research limitations
  • Potential variations in cultural understanding
  • Any corrections or updates made to content
  • Limited use of AI tools (see Section 7)

Honesty builds trust with readers and supports EEAT principles.

2.4 Reader-Centric Writing

Content should be written for clarity and usefulness.
We aim for:

  • Clean, accessible English
  • Thoughtfully structured articles
  • Modern but respectful tone
  • Avoidance of unnecessary jargon
  • Engaging but accurate storytelling

3. Sources and Research Standards

We use a combination of:

  • Publicly available, credible sources
  • Institutional references (e.g., museums, archives, cultural organizations)
  • Books, journals, and academic materials
  • Government websites when applicable
  • Local insights, contextual knowledge, and editorial interpretation

We avoid relying on:

  • Unverified claims
  • Questionable online sources
  • Sensational or low-quality information

Sources do not need to be academic-only—but they must be credible.

4. Attribution and Originality

4.1 Original Writing

All articles must be written originally for The Archipelago.
We do not allow:

  • Plagiarism
  • Uncredited copying
  • Rewriting that mirrors another source too closely

4.2 Quoting and Referencing

When referencing external materials:

  • We paraphrase in our own words
  • We provide attribution where appropriate
  • We respect intellectual property rights

5. Travel Content Standards

Travel articles must:

  • Avoid guaranteeing real-time accuracy
  • Avoid promising specific outcomes
  • Use neutral phrasing (“may,” “based on available information,” etc.)
  • Encourage readers to verify details independently

We do not publish:

  • Risky travel claims
  • Irresponsible recommendations
  • Unsafe, unethical, or harmful advice

Travel content is inspirational, informational, and contextual—not prescriptive.

6. Content Review and Editing Process

6.1 Drafting

Articles begin as drafts, notes, or outlines, sometimes supported by AI-assisted structuring (see Section 7).

6.2 Human Editing

All articles go through human review for:

  • Factual accuracy
  • Clarity
  • Tone consistency
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Grammar and readability
  • Structural coherence

6.3 Final Approval

Nothing is published without human approval by an editor responsible for quality and accuracy.

7. AI-Assisted Workflow

We may use AI tools to assist with:

  • Brainstorming
  • Draft structuring
  • Language refinement
  • SEO metadata suggestions

However:

  • AI does not publish or approve content
  • AI-generated text is always edited or rewritten by a human
  • AI is not treated as an authoritative source
  • AI outputs are checked against human judgment and verified references

AI is a support tool—not a substitute for editorial integrity.

8. Updates, Maintenance, and Corrections

8.1 Updates

We periodically update articles to:

  • Improve clarity
  • Add new information
  • Refresh outdated details
  • Refine structure or accuracy

8.2 Corrections

Significant corrections follow our official Corrections Policy.

8.3 Version Control

Major updates may include a “Last Updated” timestamp at the top or bottom of the article.

9. Visual Media and Photo Guidelines

  • Images should enhance storytelling and clarity
  • Visuals must be legally usable (licensed, original, or free-use)
  • AI-generated images must not depict real places inaccurately or deceptively
  • Descriptive alt text is included when appropriate
  • Avoid misleading photo manipulation

Consistency in aesthetic style is encouraged.

10. Ethical Standards

We uphold:

  • Respect for local communities
  • Avoidance of harmful stereotypes
  • Honest representation of places, customs, and cultures
  • No hidden advertising or undeclared sponsorship
  • Clear labeling of paid or affiliated content

Articles should maintain integrity and avoid sensationalism.

11. Contact and Feedback

We encourage readers to notify us of errors, improvements, or concerns related to content, accuracy, or representation.
